For many young people, it is not the digital world, but the physical reality that creates barriers in communication. In fact, they prefer online communication to physical contact. They find the speed and directness with which they are expected to react in real life situations stressful. The consequences are drastic.

Time to respond

Many young people say they have difficulty with offline contact, according to research conducted as part of the European  broad market prospects Dynamic Identity project . In Poland, Greece and the Netherlands, many young people said that the pace of communication in the real world is too high.

Online, they have the time to respond when they are ready, offline they don’t. Online, they have the opportunity to think before they respond to something and they can still refine that response. As long as an app doesn’t show that they are typing, they can pretend that they are not yet responding to a message or that something else was taking their attention while they were writing. This way, they can decide for themselves how quickly or slowly they respond to something.

In reality, these options do not exist. Offline, they are expected to respond spontaneously. There, it  clean email  is not possible to gain time or to work on their answer for a long time. They have to respond immediately. For many young people, this feels like a threat that even leads to serious stress.
