Another interesting point Mueller talked about is the difference between ongoing algorithmic ranking and the more permanent effects of a ranking system that requires a cycle of updates before the site can recover.

Someone asked about this:

“The simple question is. do you need to wait for a new kernel update to recover from the impact of the previous update?”

John Mueller replied:

“Not all changes require another update cycle. In practice. however. I would assume that more severe effects will require another update. Core updates can include many things.”

He then continued with these interesting remarks:

“For example. the rating formula + some special database thresholds could be updated. The effects of the updated formula are mostly ongoing. changes to thresholds often require another update to accommodate.

The above means that there are two types of effects that can affect rankings. One is that it is part of a continuously updated ranking formula that can quickly reflect changes made to a website. The second kind of algorithmic effect is one that requires massive recalculation.
